Trojans and Celtics join forces for Service Day in Joplin

Members of the Class of 2012 from St. Mary’s Bundchu Memorial High School and Archbishop O’Hara High School filled two fifty-five passenger buses and traveled to Joplin, Mo on Tuesday, October 18 for a day of service.  The students assisted with outdoor clean-up in the aftermath of the May tornado.  

The students boarded buses at 6 a.m. for a 6:30 a.m. departure.  Catholic Charities of Southwest Missouri is helped coordinate the student efforts.  Students and teachers worked from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in two locations.  At one location, students dug a foundation for a home that needs to be rebuilt.  At the other location, students worked on digging a trench so that a new water line can be laid for a rebuilt home.

St. Mary’s and Archbishop O’Hara are high schools of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.  Together, they serve nearly 500 young women and men in grades 9 through 12 in east and southeast Jackson County.

Congratulations to Katie Alexander who was named the 2011 recipient of the Saint Michael's College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience.  The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement.  Award recipients, named at schools throughout the country are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school sponsored honors organization.  They must demonstrate a commitment to service activities in high school or community organizations taking leadership roles in these activities.
